A RECITAL and certificate presentation for a Brunei Investment Agency-hosted Al-Quran Reading Competition was held yesterday at the Ministry of Finance.

In her welcoming speech, Hjh Hartini Abdullah (pic), BIA's Managing Director, said she was overwhelmed by the response to the Al-Quran reading competition, which saw both men and women compete in verse recitals in seven different songs including Bayyati, Jiharkah and Rast.

Judged on criteria such as tone, song and the oration of verses in accordance to length and time taken to read, the recital yesterday saw finalists showcased their talents to invited guests from the Ministry of Finance and other departments. Present as guest of honour was Dato Paduka Haji Bahrin Abdullah, Deputy Minister of Finance.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Finance, the Al-Quran reading competition is an annually organised event, with 22 participants vying for the top spots this year. Taking first place in this year's competition with a near-perfect score of 92 per cent was Hj Mohd Basreen Hj Bintaj, whilst Hjh Siti Raedah Hj Dollah earned the top spot for the women's category with a score of 90.2 per cent.The Brunei Times
